IntelliCAD software (Phoenix as old name), is one of the main products of Softdesk in America. In order to compete with AutoCAD, Softdesk have designed the alternative product: “Phoenix”（intellicad）in 1994. Softdesk set its marketing price as 1/10 of that of AutoCAD, and claimed that Phoenix(intellicad) is 99% compatible with AutoCAD, so that it could take a big share in CAD market. However, IntelliCAD is not so lucky as expected, Autodesk not only took its advantages and defeated Softdesk, but also took in Softdesk 1996, so Softdesk disappeared.
On voilating The AntiTrust Law, Federal Court claimed Softdesk could only be purchased after selling Phoenix out. So Phoenix was sold to Visio Company (main product is Visio flowchart ). In 1998, Visio changed this software name from Phoenix to IntelliCAD,and released IntelliCAD98.
However,the story is still continues.In 1999,Microsoft showed its interest on Visio flowchart software and purchased Visio, but IntelliCAD is excluded. In order to survive, IntelliCAD become a company itself, and set up ITC (IntelliCAD Technology Consortium). Those companies who are interest could buy the program code, and share its updates every years.The member is also allowed to modify the original code to a new CAD software and sell it legally in the market.
AutoCAD is identified as the industry Standard In the CAD industry, so most of the CAD providers trying their best to be compatible with AutoCAD. The core code of IntelliCAD is also Compatible with AutoCAD in a high level.IntelliCAD is compatible with AutoCAD and support DWG file format.IntelliCAD support AutoCAD menu,provide second development interface and keep the same operating habit with AutoCAD. The IntelliCAD softwares before IntelliCAD 7.0 is not support ARX,this issue have ben refered many times as a default of IntelliCAD,but IntelliCAD 7.0 have realized DRX support(similar and compatible with AutoCAD ARX)
